sita sings the blues

Ever read the Ramayana? It’s one of the two great Hindu epics, the other being the Mahabharata and tells the story of Ram and his wife Sita. Sita is abducted by the demon King of Lanka, Ravana and the epic follows Ram’s journey to rescue her.

We haven’t come across too many western retellings of the epic but Nina Paley’s movie which combines Anette Hanshaw’s jazz songs with Paley’s animated version of the Ramayana creates one of the most beautiful things you will ever see. It’s aesthetically pleasing but also really funny and witty. The Indian “puppets” who narrate the story hilariously point out inaccuracies in the epic and call Hanuman “the monkey” and Sita “blood thirsty”.  It is well worth the one and a half hours you’ll spend watching it. We’ve watched it many many times.

Utts also wrote about it on her other blog last year.

Enjoy this phenomenal treasure.
