newspaper blackout

A newspaper article is often best when read whole, except when Austin Kleon works his magic. Austin takes a newspaper article and then proceeds to blackout huge chunks of the article and leaves only a few words, creating a beautiful mélange of random words that fit perfectly together.

He uses sharpies, paint, his computer, or his iPad to create his work.

Though technically anyone can create the kind of poetry he does, we happen to think he is quite amazing. Here’s a sampling of his creations.

He does great horoscopes too. Here are ours. Find yours here.

 And our favourite.

He does many other amazing things, so go check out his website and blog (particularly How to Steal Like an Artist). If you want to buy his art, 20×200 sells it. He also made made his newspaper blackout poems into a book. Utts recommends it!
